it is not DOS, rather CWSDPMI that creates the exception. i do not know
enough about the technical details to explain it very well. my policy is
to always boot to plain dos (not ms-dos mode) and test my programs there
once in a while (after all, it is convenient to work in windows.)
anyway, if your program crashes under cwsdpmi but seems to run fine in a
dos box, that means, in all likelihood, that there is a pointer related
bug in your code.
