For UNIX?  Intel for one (they also make a drop in code generator for
Visual C++).  Of course, my comments were to point out that the majority
of UNIXes do not run on X86 platforms.  Both UNIXWARE and SOLARIS market
their own compiler

It's a standard for people who don't care to pay for a better one.
But UNIX (except for FREEBSD and LINUX perhaps) isn't BASED on GCC.
My definition of based is what system software is written in, not
what some random user might put on his machine.
