Cheap PC UNIX clones?
Would that be Linux and FreeBSD?

Well, I've used Solaris on Sun SPARC (not x86) and GCC, because there is
NO compiler. GCC is much better than the C compiler which came with SunOS
4.x. And GCC produces faster code than the IRIX 5.3 IDO C compiler (I've
personally used both setups).

I find it offensive for someone to disparage "cheap PC clones." Sure,
Linux is cheap. It also is measurably faster than SCO Unix and Solaris
x86 on the same hardware. Cheap doesn't mean inferior, in this regard it
actually is superior.

Better compiler, you say.
While I freely admit no experience with Crays or the sort, my experience
with GCC (on IRIX, Solaris, and SunOS) is that GCC is superior to the
bundled or extra-cost (in the case of IRIX) compiler.
