That was one of the possible causes I thought about.  Since there's no 
standard tool in DJGPP like Unix `which' (I have one such snarfed from 
somewhere on the net), I figured out that replacing it will also reveal 
if that is the problem.

Probably, some real-mode version that doesn't support long command lines 
and Unix-style quoting with a single quote.
