It is also possible that when your network stuff is resident it installs
some file-sharing stuff, semaphores and suchlike to keep two things
writing the same file at the same time, or one thing reading a file
another is modifying. In that case file accesses have to go through the
additional layer of file-sharing stuff between your app and the data on
disk. This, of course, would only slow down file opens and closes, and not
reads/writes to a file once opened and left open.
