Correct me if I'm wrong, but Pascal traditionally uses one 8-bit byte
for the string length, limiting the total number of characters in a
string to 255.

I know the Macintosh toolbox has some facilities to allowed "wide
strings," or ones where the length is two bytes (up to 65 535 characters
in the string), but I wasn't aware there was any standard Pascal feature
to allow this.
