Uhh....Well DJGPP is fast.  Just as fast as Watcom, faster even (or so
people claim, I've heard the opposite too so go with what makes you
feel good).  The benefits of protected mode are multitudinous.  The
first benefit is no more 640k/64k hassles and no kludges like EMS/XMS
to deal with either.  Just access any area of memory (as long as you
do it right) in your machine.  It's great, it's fast and it's better
for games than real mode.  It just so happens that DJGPP is free and
compares very well with other protected mode compilers.  Don't even
think about writing a game with TC++ 3.0.  I know that Wolfenstein was
programmed with BC++ (along time ago) but I think you should aim
higher in your search for a good compiler.  HTH
