The LGPL exists because enough people 'bitched' about the GPL for the
FSF to do something ;)

The exemptions for iostreams, libc probably exist because people
'bitched' about the LGPL on standard language elements.

The STL is free because the FSF don't have the copyright and cannot
easily bind it to their own definition of 'free'.
