Both MIDI music and sound effects both vanish? That is _very_ strange!
What happens if you call this function but set both volumes to 255? And
how about 254? (that will force some adjustment to be made, but should
only be a very slight change). And perhaps most importantly, what type
of soundcard do you have? I'd like to know what you think it is, and
what Allegro things it is, eg. what play.exe prints up as the driver
descriptions...
