Even though you don't want to use the GRX code, what is wrong with
borrowing some of the font files from the distribution? That's what I
did in Allegro when I needed some bitmap font data...

I don't know where you would find any docs on the GRX file format, but
it isn't very complicated. Mark Wodrich wrote the loader used in Allegro
by looking at the GRX source code, so you can probably figure it out
just from the sources (it might be useful to look at the Allegro reader
as well, which is in the file allegro/tools/datedit.c).
