I don't know of fort77 but if you mean f2c vs g77, I can tell you that
g77 is the GNU Fortran frontend to gcc, the GNU C compiler.
f2c has been developed by S. Feldman at AT&T research labs,
who was one of the people laying the grounds of f77.
I'm still thinking g77 needs some time to mature while f2c is a very
ripe 'product'. The fact that the latter is producing C as an intermediate
product can be made invisible and - though it may seem more a disadvantage -
can be of greater benefit in understanding parameter passing mechanisms
and allow for some optimizations.
I'd go for f2c. I've compiled hundreds of thousand lines of f77/FORTRAN code
with it.
