Implementing the standard 56-bit crypt(1) algorithm is non-trivial to do
yourself, besides why bother to write your own when there's a standard
"canonical version" out there?

Just get yourself a copy of GNU libc for Linux (big!) and cut out the
crypt(1) implementation there. You're set.
