Thank you for the reply.  Actually I didn't notice that the character
in the program was slightly different from the one in my comment until
a few hours after posting my message.  I am also using a UK keyboard
which must be where the problem came from.  The key to the left of
the 1 works for compiling, so my problem is solved.  Phew, I thought I
might have to use a windows editor like notepad :-)
