You are right! It is fantastic!

I had a similar problem. The best way to solve it is to reread the FAQ. I had to reinstall 
DJGPP before I got it to make Allegro correctly. You may have to do the same;)

Have you set the path, temp and DJGPP variables in your autoexec.bat?
