i  wonder if this is relevant since you have not posted details, but this 
happens to me when i compile with the profiling _and_ the debug options 
on. try compiling with the debug option (-g) but not the profiling option 
(-pg). of course i am assuming  that you get a SIGSEGV signal _only_ when 
you run you program from gdb, and that it runs fine when run from the dos 
prompt.
