OK, then feel free NOT to read the FAQ.  But this question is answered 
there in section 18.4 there, and even includes a code fragment that shows 
how this should be done.  If it is so against your principles to look 
there, then by all means disregard the FAQ and reinvent the wheel from 
scratch.
