There are some programs and device drivers (one even from Microsoft) that 
"extend" the BIOS type-ahead buffer to an arbitrary amount of characters 
(generally the upper limit is 256). I have had very bad experiences with 
such utilities; they have caused anything from ls to Windows to crash on 
occassion. If you do have such a thing loaded, unload it.
