With Emacs, this consistently happens when you have exactly 22
environment variables defined before you invoke Emacs.  But it is very
hard to debug, you are right, especially since it disappears under a
debugger.  If a smaller (ideally, a minimal trivial) program can be
devised that crashes in that way, it might allow to find the bug and
correct it.  If you can try to reproduce this, please do.
