The amiga originally used a Motorola 68000 processor.  Words were 16 bits on 
it.

When we used the 68040 processor at work the manuals we had 
referred to 32 bit words.

If the meaning was 'the normal integer register size' then your not 
changing the meaning are you.  Its kind of like ints in C.  They are 
not defined to be a particular size, but the fastest for a given processor.

CPUs that I know call words 32 bits long include

MIPS
Sparc
Intels i860/i960
HP PA-Risc
