There is no such data type in ANSI C. Perhaps you mean "unsigned
char"? If so, that's what you should use. Alternatively, there is no
reason why you can't do:
typedef unsigned char u_char;
or even
#define u_char unsigned char
Then, "u_char" will be a valid data type.
