Subject: Quake vs. Demos

OK, I am officially kicking all of you off of this thread unless you go
back and read the messages :)

I NEVER said that Carmack was a bad programmer, I never said that Quake
was a bad game. Plain and simple, I said that he's not the best
programmer in the world, his code isn't that great to look at, and his 3D
engine isn't the fastest. Please people, read what I say before you try
to lynch me.

Now, just because he doesn't have pretty code doesn't mean he's not a good
programmer... In fact, I hate pretty code. C++ is the embodiment of
pretty code, and it sucks.

Or, for example, look at Thomas Pytel's (Tran's) code. You can get the
source to his demo Amnesia, but it won't do you any good to look at unless
you ALREADY know what you're doing.

And to defend myself on the 3D of Quake... Sure, it's some decent 3D, and
sure, Carmack does know what he's doing, but plain and simple, I've seen
Demo coders do more stuff than him, faster than him, and make it look
better than him. I never said that they could code games, but some of
them can. Look at the Into the Shadows demo, that was coded by demo
coders who have now begun writing games... Into the Shadows, if it's ever
released, will have a 3D engine unlike anything anybody's ever seen,
simple because of Triton's TAPE (Triton Advanced Physics Engine). It's
faster, better and more realistic than anything I've ever seen. If you
haven't seen this demo (itsdemo.exe or .zip I believe), LOOK at it.
