I think they were working on the Linux Port actually.  Carmack 
did OpenGL until just recently when he turned it over to 
Zoid (CTF) along with QuakeWorld.

No - the sight was actually hacked into.  Source for Abuse, Quake,
and also Golgotha (I think) was taken
