More than a rumor, seems that Intel cut the FP unit to reduce the power 
consumption and be able to use a plastic package reducing the cost of the chip 
and having a new product on the market to beat AMD that was producing 386DX 
40MHz chips thanks to the better degree of integration achieved by AMD.
