The most common resolution for Mode-X is actually 320x240x256.  Other
possible
resolutions include 320x480x256, and something like 640x400x256, but I'm
not sure
about that one.  It can easily be made as fast as regular VGA and SVGA
through the
use of latches, page flipping, and other assorted tricks to be found in
M. Abrash's
"Zen of Graphics Programming, 2nd Edition."
