Trust DJ to deflate all of our wild speculations.  Turns out the reason
was strictly prosaic.  ;)

Of course, it's great to know that id really took the time to learn
about what was available instead of just picking a high-priced compiler
because for that much money it had to be good.  It means that there is
hope that, one day, commercial software companies may actually take off
their blinders...
