Perhaps Paul meant he had a standard VGA *card*. In which case if memory
serves me he may not have 256 colour modes above MCGA (VGA) 320x200.
If he has an SVGA card (hopefully VESA) then setting the mode isn't a
problem as you've said - it's then a case of whether the monitor can synch
correctly. 

Try GRX for 16colour modes.
