LZW=lempel ziv welch

Welch was this fellow at Unisys who published a paper on his mods to the
LZ77 algorithm (which is the one used by GZIP btw) and took out a patent.
that's what's causing all the LZW trouble these days -- Unisys wants YOU
to pay them $$$ for the use of LZW. That's why the FSF uses JPEG's instead
of GIF's in their web pages -- GIF's ain't free anymore.
