This seems to be a moderately recent development; I suspect it's mostly
caused by new newsreaders that have this feature.  It never used to happen
before all these fancy GUI newsreaders (at least, that I remember).

I personally find it confusing; if mail shows up in my mailbox, I have to
wonder whether or not the email is a single reply to me (in which case I
should respond by email as wel), or whether it's a courtesy copy of
something posted to news (in which case I'd rather respond through news).

Some newsreaders tell you that it's a courtesy copy by putting a Newsgroups
line in the email, but then some newsreaders just use this to indicate that
the emailer is responding to a news article.

Basically, I'm with you -- copying people via email does nothing but
confuse the situation.
