OK, I'll bite: what the hell is groff?

(And why, oh why must unix programs always have names that are just random
letters chosen to be pronouncible but without meaning?
DOS:
dir(ectory)
help (self explanatory)
turbocpp (turbo c++) (ugh, but mnemonic name anyways)
win(dows)
exit
more
doom
doom2
duke3d
quake :)
setup
netscape
edit
Unix:
ls (huh?)
man (huh huh? This is the help command, and it's not named 'help'?)
grep (isn't that a fruit that grows only in Indonesia?)
groff (whaaa?)
make (make what? an executable. why not makeexe?)
diffs (heard of this too...what the blue blazes is it?)
x (x what? No clue this is actually their Windows.)
lynx (not as descriptive as netscape, and not graphical)
emacs (This I know is an acronym. Not exactly obvious what it means
            though unlike edit)
pico (ditto)
vi (and I had the misfortune of being exposed to this menace to
modern society and mental stability. It starts up in a command
mode where you can't edit by simply typing text! Worse, there's no
onscreen indication how to change to the edit mode, or back again.
Worse still, there is also no onscreen indication of the *exit
command*. Worst of all, F1 doesn't bring a help screen...and there
is no onscreen indication of what key does that either, and
since it's probably a quadruple bucky, nobody would guess in a
            million years!)
)
