I have a cheap soundcard with OPL3 and an external MIDI port (but I don't
have a synth). However, I can get _very_ good, wavetable sound out of it
using Timidity (at terrible CPU cost -- 60% of a 486dx2). Now Timidity is
for UNIX, but the Timidity page mentions something similar for DOS..
