I think the gateway is one of the strongest points here. Breaking it
would
simply cause lots of people to subscribe to BOTH the group and list.
That's
silly. I make a conscious effort to keep the Usenet, and therefore list,
traffic low by only posting things to the group (like this) which I feel
other people will benfit from. Other than that I reply via e-mail. It
makes
the recipient's life easier (when they're asking questions) and keeps
less
pertinent information out of the newsgroup. If more people would stick
to
this ideal, this discussion probably wouldn't be necessary. Nonetheless,
I feel that with the current situation, retro-moderation is a good idea.

Many people have expressed concern about "borderline" posts where the
decision would not necessarily be clear. If, in those cases, the RMs
simply
try to err on the side of caution (leaving the posts up) then we have
NOTHING to lose. Allow certain people the privelege to kill posts which
are clearly off-topic, and if people decide that certain threads on the
border should go as well, then those people appointed as RMs can get a
feel for how to refine their "unposting" practices.

Just some thoughts...

Brian
