As of about two weeks ago, there is indeed such a way. Go to 
http://www.talula.demon.co.uk/allegro/links.html, and download
ttf2pcx.zip.

There are a lot of fonts bundled with the GRX library (get the fonts zip
from GRX version 1, or from my web page). My work-in-progress version of
Allegro can also import BIOS format 8x16 fonts, and there are a lot of
those around on the net...
