I have (unsuccessfully) tried to install under DOS,
I FTPed the major files and unzipped them.
   set the DJGPP environment variable.
But everytime i run cpp i get the "cannot find stdlib.h" error.

I ask for a place where i could find a full listing of directories &
files (& config files if there is some) of a full working version.

   wishes

Did you download the readme.1st file? It has detailed installation instructions.
Possible problems include: Did you unpack which pkunzip? Include the -d option?
Did you run setdjgpp.bat?? Get and read the readme.1st. Installation has always
worked for me when I follow the rules.
