Maybe the wrong newsgroup, but anyway:

Linux is a UNIX-clone for i386 based computers.
It is NOT like windows.
Check out some of the relevant newsgroups.. comp.os.linux etc.
It is hardly mentioned in magazines because it is freeware!
(it really beats most commerciAl products.. you should try it)

for the 'protected vs real' question (which is relevant here) I can only point
at the FAQ and the readme's coming with DJGPP.
(I presume you know what this is,
not trying to be arrogant, just curious)
