DJTAR doesn't support multivolume tar archives.  If you can add this
support and submit the changes (without breaking all the other cases it
handles today ;-), that would be a welcome addition to its functionality. 

In case you decide to give it a try, the sources for DJTAR are in the 
djlsr201.zip archive.
