I cannot say something about the best configuration, because I have not
the time to test all possibilities, but I will describe my
configuration.

I have a 486DX2/66 and 20MB of RAM.

I have tested it with and without RamDrive and with/without smartdrive
and
I found, that the standard setting of Win 95 are good. That means, I'm
not
using a RamDrive and not external disk cache. The Win95 internal disk
cache
is tourned on (standard) and is in my opinion a good cache. There is
also
turned on the write cache as deafult, but currently I never had problems
with it, even after a crash (and I have often such a beast)

If you are bombed out to DOS if trying to configure the DOS-Box, there
is
probably something wrong with your Win95 installation.
I have configured my DOS-box to use 32 MB DPMI-memory and all the other
memory to Auto. The flag for protecting the system memory of faults from
the DOS-box is turned on.

I think this is a result of your only caching D:
I'm using Win95 only, because I can use there more than on DOS sessions,
not
for using Win95 as graphical OS. Thats why I cannot say about the other
(mis)features of that OS.
And at least, remember the fact, that Win95 enables you to use the long
filenames, so you should take care of setting the LFN environment
variable
to the correct value you want, when using DJGPP.
