I use zip/unzip quite extensively, and there still seem to be a few problems
with CRC incompatibilities between PKZIPed files and the free Unzip. I will
see the "BAD CRC 00000000" now and again, which means to unzip it with
PKUNZIP instead of UNZIP.

One of the reasons it is available everywhere is that PKWare made the algorithm
free to use, even though they patented it, and even helped the various
freeware developers. For the small cost, it's worth registering the
PKware version. Support software you like and does good things for you!
