The mailing list and the news group are gated both ways.  If you reply to 
the list, your reply is posted (by DJ's server) to the news group.  
If you reply to the news group, DJ's server will grab your posting and 
send it to the mailing list.  This process makes the message headers so 
that if you get a message from the mailing list, your "Reply" function 
should automatically pick the mailing list address, not the news group.  
This works fine for me, and I also use PINE.

Maybe if you describe your problem in more detail, it will become more 
clear.
