Given some of the discussion about whether djgpp is suitable for
beginners, I just want to say that I find it a fine first compiler.
One nice thing is the helpful compiler messages. Other uses who
have experience with commercial compilers tell me that often the error
messages are difficult to figure out, and one djgpp fan who's also used
a number of commercial brands tells me that djgpp is definitely the
friendliest.
Also, the djgpp utilities are a great plus. In two weeks' time, I've
already gotten good use out of dtou, utod, djtar, and split. And let's
not forget cwsdpmi, a definite upgrade from QDPMI in QEMM v. 7.5x <grin>.
Finally, I don't need to be a C expert to appreciate the benefits of a
flat memory model and a UNIX-like orientation. When running MS-DOG with
a 32-bit CPU, why not use a 32-bit compiler?
With thanks to the djgpp team,
Margo Schulter
