Hated?
Hmm... of all the C books I've ever read, K&R is what I found most useful.
Someone in fact quoted (forgot whom) that the tutorial section is second
to none (first few chapters). Of course, the BNF grammar and stuff I can
do without, but overall, very informative.

K&R -- next best thing to man pages and "Advanced UNIX System V Network
Programming" -- which I also recommend.
