Or maybe LFN should control the default value for case preservation (allowing
for a variable to override that default in case there IS a problem
somewhere?)?

That is the case, but in my case, the files are actually getting created on a
UNIX file system and I want the case of the file as created on disk to match
the case of the filename I specify.  I think I've finally got the samba (the
software running on the UNIX boxes to export their file systems to the DOS LAN
Manager share world) options set right to preserve the case - I kept editing a
file shared between DOS & UNIX and the filename kept getting downshifted
(rather annoying to have the filename changing - UNIX does NOT do
case-insensitive lookups).
