I have never had EMM386.exe in my config.sys. Why use this?

I must admit that I have not studied the different memory management
schemes for DOS so I cannot converse intelligently concerning their
relative merits or drawbacks. What does this do?

Was there some documentation that I missed saying that I needed it?
When did it show up? I have been using DJGPP for some time and have
never had to put that in my config.sys before.
