If you have news access, there's a whole set of linux groups:

comp.os.linux.admin:
comp.os.linux.announce:
comp.os.linux.development:
comp.os.linux.help:
comp.os.linux.misc:

These are extremely active. I think your machine can run Linux OK,
but keep it mind that you have to partition your HD for a LInux
filesystem, and it will be large.
