Full optimization by default at the cost of compile-time
performance?? Casual compilations wouldn't offend a soul, but in
the worst case scenerio, what kind of a hit do you expect?

Also, is, or can the "default" options be set via an environment
variable, and thus make the decision in question perhaps
unnecessary?
