How about second-level (aka L2, aka off-chip) cache on the motherboard?
Are they identical also?

Check out your BIOS chipset settings on the 486. I've found that
suboptimal settings of the various wait states would give me a
30-40% performance hit.  Consult your motherboard manual for optimal
settings.  Setting your secondary cache to write-back (instead of
write-through) is also a big win, if your motherboard will handle
it.

What performance do you get from both machines?  The ``normal''
compilation speed of GCC is known, so I can tell you if your
machine is ``normal'' or below that.
