Hi,

Thanks to Stephen Turnbull, Bob Babcock, Michael Castle and Hans-Bernard
for their comments on my query about ld and make.
As suggested by Stephen, the solution turned out to be quite simple: 
in \config.sys, increase the number of file handles (it was set to FILES=20).
Obviously, there are more files opened when gcc is called by make, than
when it is called from the DOS command line. 
Still, I tried gcc-RM hoping for a faster link (it takes 4-5 min. now...)
but that didn't change much.
