I don't know if there is something wrong with your program, but this 4DOS
error rings a bell with me: You wouldn't happen to be running 4dos 5.0, 
*revision D*, by any chance ? ('ver /r' will tell you).

Rev. D had a bug, that produced this error at times. It seems to have gone
away in rev. E, which came out last week. (Avail. from ftp.std.com, in
/vendors/jpsoft/4dos/4d50e.zip).

One way of provoking the bug was:

  - start a second copy of 4dos
  - do a 'ver /r' command
  - 'exit'
