Thanks for the suggestion.  I did get the debugger working with a few source
code changes, and posted them in a separate message.  I don't entirely
understand the changes I made, but the 4 or 5 hours I spent debugging the
debugger let me find the problem I was really looking for in my code in a few
minutes.
