Wayne, I'm new to djgpp and don't know about zombie files left over, but I
have some experience with Unix compilers; when you say

couldn't it be the case that the array is initialized? I have experienced
differences in link time in the order of several minutes (native C compilers
on Unix boxes) between two programs which are exactly alike apart from static
initialization of large arrays.
