It happens to others as well.  I suspect that what happens is that some mail
handler between you and the listserv fails and starts bouncing mail.  Either
an automated procedure or the list owner, I don't know which, sees the
bounced mail and removes you from the list.  Since mail to you is bouncing,
there's no point in sending a message telling you that you have been removed.
I once considered setting up a cron task to resubscribe periodically, but I
settled for logging messages so that I when I suspect an outage I can check
when I last received mail.
